News Updates From The Ministry of Health, Gombe.

Dearest friends and followers,
I promised you a good read and I hope you enjoyed my article on the ‘Preventive, promotive and Rehabilitative function of the Ministry of Health, Gombe’.  In this article, I just want to update you on the affairs of the ministry of health the past week. Let us hear from you for we are here to serve you…ok?
Updates From Dr. Ishaya Kennedy

So here we go….
As I mentioned in my preceding post, a case of lasser fever has been detected in the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe in a referral patient from Taraba. Lassa viral hemorrhagic fever is an acute illness of 1-4 weeks duration that occurs in West Africa. Lassa fever occurs in all age groups and in both men and women. Persons at greatest risk are those living in rural areas, especially in areas of poor sanitation or crowded living conditions. Prevention of Lassa fever in the community is possible if people will focus on promoting good “community hygiene” to discourage rodents from entering homes. Effective measures include storing grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of garbage far from the home, maintaining clean households and keeping cats. Well, samples of the virus have been taken to the national laboratory for lasser detection in Enugu and we will do all we can in collaboration to the FMC, Gombe to prevent the spread of this virus.
 In another development;
The executive governor of Gombe state, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, in his concern for the health of Women and Children in the state has approved the building of the Women and Children centre in Tudun-Wada, Gombe. The centre which is the first of its kind in the State will carter solely to the most vulnerable citizens of the state, the women and children.  Next week, application and contractors’ bidding will start by God’s grace. I’ll keep you posted on as this news unfolds.
The executive governor of Gombe state also approved the commencement of a department of bio-engineering. Like I stated in my post about the preventive and rehabilitative function of the ministry, the provision of prosthetics ad services of rehabilitation to amputees and people with troubled limbs is also a concern of the administration. Till date, there has not been a department that concerns itself with this in the ministry of health; Gombe and the commencement of this bio-engineering department will carter solely to such cases.
In his dedication to the health of the people of the state, the governor, Alh Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has agreed to receive the polio-eradication torch himself. Hopefully, through this gesture, Gombe State will squarely address the issue of polio. Our aim is to completely eradicate this disabling disease that has reduced the productivity of many of our youths.
And Lastly,
The commissioners of all ministries of Health in the North gathered in Abuja last week to discuss how to deliver quality healthcare to the people of their states. In my next post, I’ll upload a picture album of this meeting.
Thanks!

Preventive, Promotive & Rehabilitative Function of The Ministry of Health

Dear Followers,

Dearest friends, followers and all you who have concerned yourselves enough to check my blog out… I want to apologize for my silence during the week and to break this silence; I have posted three different post that I believe you will enjoy reading!
In this post, I examine the function of the ministry of health in the preventive and rehabilitative health of the people of the state. Since Knowledge they say is power and I am writing this so that the people of Gombe state will know what they are to expect from their government and in so doing, they will be able to challenge the government if it fails in their duties to them.
The administration of Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo recognizes the importance of the preventive, promotive & rehabilitative components of health care. Therefore, the Gombe State Ministry of Health provides all the required services for the preventive, promotive and rehabilitative health through its infrastructure to the fullest extent possible.

We Help you Function at Your Best

The Ministry of Health, Gombe regularly monitors the incidence and prevalence of all communicable diseases through its epidemiological & disease surveillance directorate, and notifies the concerned national and international authorities, and takes necessary preventive action. An example of the ministry’s efficiency in carrying out this duty is in the way it handled the discovery of the traits of lasser fever in the Federal Medical Centre Gombe.

High risk groups such as pregnant mothers and children under the age of five are given necessary immunization (against vaccine-preventable diseases) and nutrition supplements. Reproductive health care (ANC, PNC) and birth spacing services are given to all pregnant mothers / women in reproductive age group. Special programmes are conducted to fight serious communicable diseases such as leprosy, tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, neonatal tetanus and malaria etc.

Taking note of the rapid economic and social development in the Nigeria, and being concerned that this may lead to unhealthy life-styles leading to the emergence of new health problems, special program on non-communicable diseases have been organized to fight problems such as obesity, cardiovascular disorders and diabetes. The Honorable commissioner of Health, Dr. Ishaya K.B. had been researching and sponsoring program to address diabetes, hypertension, cardio-vascular diseases and other diseases that may arise from unhealthy lifestyles even before coming to office. He was involved in the researching and creation of the program which resulted to the book titled “The 90days path to total wellness” by Dubem Mordi Jnr.

Choose Health: The 90days Path to Total Wellness!

The program has been organized to inform and educate the people so that they share a responsibility in preserving good health by adopting healthy life-styles and food habits.

Furthermore, the Gombe State Ministry of Health also promotes good health through its health education campaign and school health services. Investigative support services are provided at the institutional level, as well as a support to public health activities. Medical fitness certificates are issued to all current / prospective employees based on laboratory / other investigative services such as radiography, CT scan /MRI etc. The Ministry of Health also provides physiotherapy and rehabilitation services as an essential component of the State’s health care services.

The Ministry’s physiotherapy and rehabilitation services are generally directed toward preventing disability, relieving pain, developing, improving or restoring function and contributing to the health of the people of Gombe State. The services of qualified physiotherapists and a few other professionals such as occupational therapist and orthotics/ prosthetics are available in the ministry’s hospitals.

Curative Functions of the Ministry of Health, Gombe

The Ministry of Health serves as the main agency of the government for providing curative care to the people of Gombe. It runs hospitals and health centers which are integrated in a referral chain. The curative care services provided in The Ministry of Health hospitals is supplemented by other government hospitals/clinics such as those run by the Federal Medical Centres and State teaching Hospitals. There are also several private hospitals/clinics, which are playing an increasingly important role in providing care. All these establishments are linked with The Ministry of Health system through a referral chain.

The Ministry of Health makes primary medical care available through health centres, extended health centres and local hospitals. The regional referral hospitals mainly provide secondary medical care, while the national referral hospitals mostly provide tertiary medical care. The Ministry of Health ensures that no citizen of Gombe is denied the benefit of medical care. It could refer patients for treatment abroad, if the required treatment facilities are not available in the country. All demands / recommendations for overseas treatment are processed through a duly constituted  and tested referral organization.

Main Function of the Ministry of Health

Main Function of the Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health is the government's main agency responsible for provision, coordination and stewardship of the health sector. MoH is required to  ensure overall development of the health sector per se and in relation to other key social sectors. In keeping with this role, MoH acts as the principal architect of health system design and takes responsibility for achieving inter-sectoral coordination. It develops policies and programmes for the health sector. It implements these in coordination with all other related ministries, health services institutions under the government as well as in the private sector. MoH also advocates to all other public systems to make policies favourable to the health sector, and to refrain from making policies, which may adversely affect  the health of the people.
